Course in General Ship Handling (CGSH)

Course Duration: 5 days

Description: The Course in General Ship Handling covers the fundamentals of ship handling and is designed as an introduction to ship handling for Deck Officers, Ship Masters, Naval Officers, trainee Marine Pilots and experienced Marine Pilots.

Course content: 

  • Fundamentals of ship handling theory
  • Effect of wind and current on a vessel
  • Use of anchors for manoeuvering and emergency shiphandling use
  • Theory and demonstration of squat effect on a vessel
  • Bank effect theory and demonstration
  • General hydrodynamic principals relevant to ship handling in confined and shallow waters
  • Vessel interaction in confined waters
  • Use of tugs for shiphandling operations
  • Basic emergency scenarios during shiphandling operations with and without the use of tugs

Method of delivery: Daily program with a mix of training room theory followed by on water exercises on the Port Ash lake using scaled manned ship models for practical delivery of the on water training.

Training is delivered by experienced Marine Pilots who supervise the training on board the manned ship model.

Training facilitator/student ratio: 1 training facilitator per 2 course participants during on water exercises.

Course fee: from AUD $18150 including GST (subject to variation)

Note: Course cost does not include accommodation, breakfast and evening meals – at participants expense. Transport provided too/from Port Ash Australia during course days daily if requested from the local area (LGA).
