The facilities of Port Ash are available on a fee for use basis for all types of research.

The Port has been used to investigate the safe handling of vessels at different drafts during the planning phase of port redevelopment.   This involves the construction of a particular port, the generation of conditions such as waves and current then using tugs and the ship-models to study the requirements for safe shiphandling.
